D&AD Success
The highly coveted D&AD Black and Yellow pencils.
The D&AD New Blood awards were held recently in London and the Creative Advertising course at Lincoln was, once again, very successful. Joe Lovett, Jack Snell, Malene Loves and Elly Hogarth all scooped wooden pencils. Joe and Jack produced a thought provoking piece of work for WWF and Elly and created a very effective campaign for Talk Talk. Both teams did really well to earn wooden pencils considering the huge number of entries and the quality of work on display so congratulations go out to them.
These guys weren't the only winners on the night, Tom Watkins did fantastically well to get, not only a Yellow pencil but a Black one as well! Tom put together a very well executed campaign for WeTransfer. Tom's multi channel campaign for 'When I'm a dad' helps would-be fathers plan and take vows for this momentous step. The D&AD jury recognised that the work was so powerful and so well executed that Tom should be recognised as one of the best students at this years awards.
Being successful in student design competitions requires a lot of hard work and imagination and to achieve success at this level is truly outstanding so well done to all of our successful students.
D&AD success
The mythical D&AD New Blood pencil.
This year Lincoln CA students achieved four 'in book' awards and one nomination for a coveted D&AD Pencil. The successful students this year were Chloe Bishop, Christina Worman, Jade Andrews, Masha Shukkore, Stanley Bennett, Bethany Applebee and Tuomas Watkins.
All of the students involved richly deserve their success but special mention must go to Tuomas who got an 'In book' and a pencil nomination, whilst still in the first year of the course!
The awards ceremony is being held in London on 3rd of July as part of the New Blood festival so we will be keeping our fingers crossed for Tuomas and hoping to add to the trophy cabinet.
Well done to all that entered the D&AD New Blood competition, it's a great way to gain experience and makes the students much more professional, long may it continue.
D&AD Success
Congratulations to Claire Stokes and Christina Smith on winning a highly coveted D&AD Yellow Pencil. D&AD is one of the most prestigious international awards in advertising and to be recognised in this way is testament to the effort that the girls put into their work.
The awards ceremony was held at Old Spitalfields Market in East London and the awards were presented by D&AD President Rosie Arnold and D&AD Chairman Tim Lindsay. The ceremony was an exciting and fun packed evening for all involved and was an event that the girls will remember for a long time.
Christina and Claire looking very happy indeed.
Hundreds of students from around the world enter into the competition and the standard of work is extremely high so to win amongst such company shows just how well they have done. The girls won the Digital Advertising category and the client for this years competition was Spotify. Claire and Christina came up with an idea that neatly tied together the strengths of Spotify and Facebook to create a campaign that rewarded music fans for their dedication.
Time to clear some room on the mantlepiece.
Claire & Christina's winning work.

The girls also featured highly in another D&AD competition category, this time for the Aviva brief and were recognised as best in year for their work. To feature once in a competition as tough as this is quite an achievement but to feature in two categories is almost unheard of, so a double congratulation is in order. Because the girls did so well they have been invited to join the D&AD Graduate Academy where they will attend seminars, lectures and workshops with leading industry figures as well as gaining work experience at some of the best agencies in London.
As you may remember students from the University of Lincoln Creative Advertising programme were also successful in last year's awards in the Integrated category. To reach this level of achievement students require dedication and analytical thinking as well as a touch of inspiration, so well done girls and here's to next years competition.
D&AD New Blood 2012
It's that time of year again when the course makes its way down to London in order to exhibit at the D&AD New Blood exhibition. The show is a gathering of the best talent from all of the design Colleges and Universities from across the country. This year it was a three day long event, kicking off with a Private View on Tuesday night that was attended by the great and the good from the design and advertising industry. This was a great opportunity for the staff and students to rub shoulders with potential employers and forge links for the future.
Before...
...and after
D&AD New Blood has so much great work up on show that you have to plan effectively in order to make an eye catching and effective stand. It was therefore very flattering that D&AD singled out the University of Lincoln Creative Advertising exhibit as an example of good practice. A quick video interview with Gyles Lingwood gave the organisers some pointers on how to put together a good stand.
Lincoln shows how it should be done.
Justin Tagg busy networking.
D&AD New Blood is an intense and tiring few days but works very effectively as a springboard for the graduates into the London advertising agency scene. With industry people mingling with the students as well as workshops and events that are designed to inspire and educate it all ads up to aching feet but inspired minds.
London ad agency visits
We recently took the Level 2 students to visit four high profile and very contrasting advertising agencies in London. We always try to make the level 2 agency trip encompass as wide a range of agencies as possible and we certainly managed to live up to that aim this year.
First up in the morning for group A was a trip to the biggest agency of them all: AMV BBDO. Level two strudent Liam Nicholson explains how the visit went:
'We were greeted in the boardroom by two very polite creatives Milo Campbell and Sonny Adorjan. They spoke to us about their intriguing journey into advertising and inspired us with a screening of an AMV BBDO show-reel and 'The Process' (aka designing the stop sign) which gives a humorous insight into the client/creative relationship. As well as showing us some of their work, Sonny and Milo also spoke about the type of integrated campaigns and digital work, which creative directors like to see in a student portfolio. The highlight of the visit however, was when Paul Brazier, the executive creative director at AMV BBDO and former president of D&AD, enlightened us on the creative process and gave us advice on how to make it in Adland, all in his brilliant Brummie accent.'
Getting the chance to meet someone as high profile as Paul doesn't come around too often and the advice that he gave to the students was all the more well received because of it. AMV is a large and impressive place to visit and was a great motivation for everyone.
Whilst Group A were visiting AMV, Group B were being hosted by creative giants, Mother. Level 2 student Sophie Macdonald explains how the visit went:
'We had the amazing opportunity to visit Mother London and considering the reputation that Mother London has, it was no surprise to walk into what looked like an art gallery.'
'After seeing Mother's unconventional and fantastic ground floor we were then shown upstairs where we were introduced to the famous 250ft concrete desk. We sat down with Dan, Craig and Ben who gave us lots of advice concerning portfolio's and the hard work that needs to be put in, they also showed us some great work and ran a very insightful Q and A session to round off our visit.'
So that was the morning taken care of and it was now time for Group A to visit one of the newer agencies in London - Creature.
Level 2 student Lily Peters explains more:
'On our agency visit trip to London, we were fortunate enough to meet with Stu Outhwaite, previously C.D at Mother and now a partner of fledging agency Creature. Creature is a vibrant, creatively focused agency and Stu shared key information on how to enter the Ad world, driving home the fact that networking and contacts are essential in order to get your foot in the door. Creature had an incredibly friendly vibe and Ruud Kool - a Lincoln graduate - was able to join us and shed a more recent light on life as a post-grad Creative.'
'Having the opportunity to be within an agency environment and meeting Stu was highly motivational for us all. Creature has a very exciting feel to it and it was wonderful to visit such a new agency and meet with a successful creative who had once been in our shoes.'
The group that had previously visited Mother also visited industry heavyweight JWT in the afternoon.
Sophie Macdonald tells us more:
'As we entered the reception at JWT the walls were covered with bicycles which made the agency feel like a very cool place to work.'
'We were greeted by Senior Creative Miles Bingham who provided us with huge amounts of advice and information about the industry and went on to show us some of the adverts that he had worked on. He also gave us advice on what would happen during a work placement at an agency and what to do when dealing with big clients.'
'Miles gave us an idea of how an ad comes to life with the 'hard slog' that goes into it. He was very passionate about the work that he had produced and about working in advertising. He gave us an honest and uplifting talk about the ups and downs in the industry and at the end of his presentation he gave us his email in case we needed future help and advice.'
Phew. Quite an exhausting but very rewarding trip.
A very big THANK YOU to all of the agencies and individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to see us. Visiting an ad agency is always inspirational as well as educational and this trip proved to be no different. Here's to the next one.
