  • YCN

A star students, Joe, Lucy, Gaz, Linda and Elly.

The Young Creative Network have now made the new briefs available for their latest competition and they look as interesting and challenging as ever. The YCN student awards are a great test of a students abilities and really set a benchmark of excellence for advertising and design students.

The Creative Advertising course at the University of Lincoln has been fortunate enough to do very well in this competition and last year was no exception with no fewer than eight students picking up a highly coveted YCN award. Joe Lovett, Jonathan Salm, Ellie Hogarth, Lucy Cowlin, Gaz Hunt-Sutherland, Linda Klassens, Jenni Trotter and Gabi Kirwin were all winners.

Here's what Lucy thought of the evening. 'Situated in the impressive surrounds of the Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, the YCN Student Awards ceremony held on September 10th was a great occasion. Given there were eight students from level 2 and level 3 of Creative Advertising commended, it was a fantastic night for showcasing the work of Lincoln's aspiring advertisers!

With exquisite food, (far superior to the student standard) engrossing entertainment, good company and copious glasses of Prosecco, it was a brilliant way to celebrate. It soon became apparent just how highly acclaimed YCN is within our industry so it felt like a real achievement to be collecting our awards in the presence of such talented individuals!'

So whilst the current students get down to working on the new briefs we thought that it would be a good time to show some pictures of Septembers awards ceremony and remember that all of the hard work is worth it.
  • Laura & Elliott Cannes Young Lion

Laura & Elliott's award winning film for Barnardo's

Lincoln Creative advertising graduates Laura Clark and Elliott Starr recently enjoyed success in the highly prestigious Cannes Young Lions competition. The pair who graduated two years ago now work for Leo Burnett. Recently they entered the international Cannes Young Lion competition and won best UK team. This is great news for them and provides a very good platform for their talents, Elliott and Laura will explain more.

"We entered Cannes Young Lions a few weeks ago and had to turn around a 60 second ad for Barnardo's in 48 hours. Idea, script, shoot, edit, all by our lonesome.

To cut a long story short, we won. Best UK team.

Not many actors are interested in working in a cold church on a Saturday night with 2 hours notice. So sadly, I ended up 'starring' in it. Mwahaha.

We got briefed on Friday at 4pm.

Friday evening (until 9ish) was spent on ideas.

    As was Saturday 8-12ish.

Saturday 12-4ish was spent writing the script.

Saturday 4-6ish was spent finding locations, begging, borrowing and stealing.

(In the end, we were actually just given the keys to the church by a very trusting priest. We actually got the church just by knocking on the door and he happened to be in.

Says a lot for just getting out and asking for favours instead of making calls and emails.)

    Saturday 6-10ish was spent filming.

Saturday/ Sunday 10-11 was spent editing overnight.

We actually came up with the idea for the script on Friday night, it was one of our first thoughts.

After pummelling through dozens more ideas we realised it was the best by far. We could spend hours trying to top it. If we did we'd only have a few hours to film and edit, if we didn't, we'd have wasted that time completely.

And so we went with it. I guess it's the nature of a 48 hour competition, you're never 100% sure because you could have spent longer coming up with ideas, I guess you just have to trust yourself.

The same thing happened Sunday morning. We'd stayed up overnight editing and had 8 hours left until it had to be submitted.

We could have continued editing it, but with the footage we had it would have only got about 3% better. Plus we were both knackered and couldn't think straight. So we just submitted it.

I think we learned not to take competitions like that TOO seriously, as you'll always have doubts and you'll always be comparing the finished article to how good it could be if you got a proper director, proper actor and you had more time.

But you don't. So it's important to just enjoy it and cross your fingers."
  • D&AD success

The mythical D&AD New Blood pencil.

It's competition time and once again the Lincoln Creative Advertising course has been successful. The international D&AD New Blood awards set some very tricky briefs this year and, as ever, there were a huge number of entries from across the globe. We never take success for granted and the staff and students always work hard because they are competing with the best students across the world.

This year Lincoln CA students achieved four 'in book' awards and one nomination for a coveted D&AD Pencil. The successful students this year were Chloe Bishop, Christina Worman, Jade Andrews, Masha Shukkore, Stanley Bennett, Bethany Applebee and Tuomas Watkins.

All of the students involved richly deserve their success but special mention must go to Tuomas who got an 'In book' and a pencil nomination, whilst still in the first year of the course!

The awards ceremony is being held in London on 3rd of July as part of the New Blood festival so we will be keeping our fingers crossed for Tuomas and hoping to add to the trophy cabinet.

Well done to all that entered the D&AD New Blood competition, it's a great way to gain experience and makes the students much more professional, long may it continue.
  • YCN night

There's only one colour winners are interested in.

The Level 2 Lincoln Creative Advertising students will be working on the YCN competition soon and will no doubt be dreaming of victory. We're very proud of our students success in this competition and have always featured strongly which is very satisfying considering the high standard of the entries.

A little light reading before dinner.

Craig and Christina are 'The A Team'.

In the 2012/13 competition we had six winners in three categories, Gaby Kirwin and Alfie Daniell-Waldron for British Eurosport, Harriet Wiltshire and Marie Foster for Nissan and Christina Worman and Craig Ellinor for Plan UK. The awards ceremony was held in September and was a great night to remember for the students involved who all came away with certificates and hangovers. Christina explains how it all went.

"The YCN awards was such a nice way to mark the end of year two. With a few groups representing the University of Lincoln, the night was extra special as we could all celebrate together. YCN was a great opportunity as it is such a prestigious award to be considered for, so being named winners was very exciting as we knew the standard of work being entered was extremely high. Overall the evening was really fun with exceptional food and entertainment. If all award evenings are like this I definitely want to pursue a career in advertising!"

Marie and Harriet are straight A students.

Lincoln Creative Advertising has been very successful over the years and we do not take competition wins for granted. We know exactly how much hard work and effort that goes into them but we're confident that we will be trying our best to keep filling the trophy cabinet, so no pressure on the second years then.
  • Roses Student Awards success

Congratulations are due to second year Creative Advertising students, Sam Brown Abreu and Matt Paxton for winning their category in this year’s Roses Student Creativity Awards. Sam and Matt entered the Dandy category which required the students to help launch the famous comic in its new online format. The team created a campaign neatly combining classic images from the traditional comic with computer and online imagery which communicated Dandy's new direction.

The judges were particularly pleased with the boys efforts and felt that it answered the brief very well they were so pleased in fact, that they have decided to offer them both a work placement at the Leith Agency in recognition of their success.

This is a great opportunity for Sam and Matt because the Leith Agency produces such consistently effective advertising and will be a great place for them to learn their craft. So well done chaps and keep up the good work.
  • Third years shape of the future of 'Meet Lincoln'

Third year students from the University of Lincoln’s BA (Hons) Creative Advertising course are playing a central role in the creation of a new marketing and advertising campaign to promote the city as a quality business tourism destination.

‘Meet Lincoln’ was launched by a group of businesses within the Visit Lincoln Partnership. And whilst a main focus of Visit Lincoln is to increase the volume of leisure and short break visitors to Lincoln, Meet Lincoln will focus on raising awareness of the city as a place to meet, host conferences and bring events into the area.

Visit Lincoln Partnership manager, Emma Tatlow, asked third year Creative Advertising students to come up with the 'big idea' to promote Lincoln as a place for meetings and events.

Emma said: ‘Working in collaboration with the University on this project is really exciting. Whilst Visit Lincoln has developed a brand for the city, the students were asked to take this to the next level and come up with a creative concept for business tourism that could be applied to a range of media - such as print advertising, exhibition stands, direct mail and digital executions.

‘The students have thrown themselves into this project and I'm really impressed with the depth of their research into the target audiences and thinking carefully about Lincoln's unique selling points, and how the city can best be promoted to a business audience.’

The third year students were given the project as a competitive brief. They competed against each other to produce the best campaign and the staff team selected the best six. The shortlisted six campaigns would have all worked well as different marketing campaigns and they were produced by: Lily Hurst & Will Blackburn (with 2 solutions!); Lucy Eldridge & Ben Williams; Becky Rowlands & Vicky Thompson; Amanda Elvidge & Lily Peters; and Sophie MacDonald & Chris White.

The shortlisted teams presented their proposals to the client panel (Emma Tatlow; Niki Shepheard – Business Dev Manager, Lincolnshire Events Centre; and Creative Advertising lecturers Mike Belton and Gyles Lingwood) at the Old Palace hotel in Lincoln.

     Lily & Will

The client panel (Emma, Niki and Mike) deep in discussion

It was a incredibly difficult decision but only one presentation could win...

It was deceided that Becky & Vicky's idea was the winner. It really captured the client's imagination by using inspiring individuals from the county's past right through to the present day. Congratulations girls!

Now that the Visit Lincoln Partnership have the ‘big idea’ this winning concept will now be passed to a local design agency to develop into a workable design. Once this has been done we will reveal whole Meet Lincoln marketing and communications campaign.

The staff team believe it is really important for our students to work to a real, ‘live’ brief. The Meet Lincoln project gave our students the opportunity of working with a client and practice using their creative thinking and communication skills to solve a real-world, commercial problem.

We have such a pool of talented young people on the course and the work that the students have done on this project will bring a tangible benefit to businesses in Lincoln and Lincolnshire.

Watch this space for when we reveal the final campaign...!
  • YCN Awards Night

The Young Creative Network recently held their annual awards ceremony in London to honour the winners of this years YCN Student Competition. Amongst the successful entrants were University of Lincoln Creative Advertising's  Liam Nicholson and Vicki Thompsom. Liam and Vicki collected a gong for the work they submitted for the Triumph Bra's brief. They were second year students when they entered this national competition and it is very satisfying for the staff team to see them compete and win against students more experienced than themselves. I'll let Vicki explain how the night went in her own words.

Shoredith Town Hall was the venue for this years YCN awards ceremony.

"On September 4th, Liam and I ventured down to London to Shoreditch Town Hall for the YCN awards 2012. We were both thrilled that our work for the Industry Trust brief was commended, and even found ourselves sitting with their representatives for the ceremony. Going into the entrance area we were greeted with strange cocktails and steel drummers, and on moving into the main hall found plenty more decoration along a tropical theme. The ceremony itself was exciting and entertaining with guest speakers and clever animation shorts about their work, each speakers presenting a few different briefs' awards. After dinner our group was next up. We were presented on stage with our 'A's, our group being congratulated by guest speaker Toby Triumph. Following on from the ceremony we were directed downstairs for something 'special', which was in fact being showered with bits of jelly as it was blown up in the centre of the room... (yes, really).

Exploding Jelly and something to hang on the wall, what more could you want.

The food was an improvement on the usual student meal.

Overall an amazing evening to celebrate everyone's success, and a reminder that hard work, taking risks and enjoying your work can pay off. Thank you to everyone that congratulated us and thanks to YCN for putting on such a great evening".
  • Nick & Matt selected for GRT awards

    Some more awards news!

This year's graduates Nicky Perry & Matt Parsons have been announced as finalists for the Graeme Robertson Trust awards. Over to Nicky to tell you all about it:-

'OK, so many of you may never have heard of the Graeme Robertson Trust, but Graeme was one of Direct Marketing’s top pioneers. The trust works with the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) to act as a launchpad for creative careers, offering young talent the 'chance' they need. The trust runs an annual award competition, that's free to enter and this year it had a very sporting theme. You can read the original brief here.

'Matthew Parsons and myself teamed up to enter the competition and gave ourselves a week to complete the work. Using skills we had developed on the BA (Hons) Creative Advertising programme, we got on with interrogating the brief and finding possible solutions.

'We found the brief quite challenging: it asked for multiple medias; a competition aspect; advertising, online, direct mail and wanted participation from one million families. The brief also seemed to rely upon an advanced interest in the AVIVA UK Athletics Trial Event from the public, something Matt and I were unsure whether one million families actually had.

'To cut a long story short we created work based on the insight that when supporting athletes at the Olympics we cheer on our country's athletes, however at this event ALL the athletes are British so you wouldn't know who to support. The idea was to introduce the public to the contenders in the sport, by getting the public to support athletes from their local areas: using the concept of regional rivalry in the UK. In other words, support your local team!

Here's the final work that we produced:-

'On 10th July we found out that we had been shortlisted and were invited to attend a portfolio event held at Publicis in London. We were asked to bring along our portfolio, unfortunately as both Matt and myself had only recently separated with past creative partners we had only old work, so we decided it would be better to create a new portfolio: brand new briefs, brand new products, all of our own. However, we had only two days in which to do it! We knuckled down and got the work done, completing our portfolio with only a couple of hours to spare!

'The morning event was very fast paced – we had book crits with four top advertising minds in a short space of time and got a lot of help with our new book. We were both pleasantly surprised how many campaigns were liked considering how quickly we had turned them around. Then on 20th July, we were informed and congratulated on being finalists of this year's competition and we were invited to the DMA Awards on December 4th where the winner will be announced.

'All in all, we have learnt to keep your ear to the ground for upcoming competitions and opportunities, and enter anything and everything you can! Because you never know...!'

Congratulations Nicky & Matt on getting so far in this highly-regarded and long running national competition (and many thanks Nicky for this write-up). We'll all be keeping our fingers crossed for you at the awards night. Good luck!
  • More competition success

The Young Creative Network competition results were announced recently and we're very glad to say that second year students, Liam Nicholson and Vicki Thompson won in their category for The Industry Trust. The brief asked the students to persuade movie lovers to stop watching pirated films and watch the real thing instead.

The judges thought that the pair of them got this very tricky brief just right, so hearty congratulations to Liam and Vicki. They have been invited to the YCN Student Awards Ceremony at Shoreditch Town Hall, London in early September were they can collect their gong and mingle with their fellow winners.

We'll bring you pictures of the awards evening when Liam and Vicki step up on to the stage in September but in the meantime, well done.

  • D&AD Success

Congratulations to Claire Stokes and Christina Smith on winning a highly coveted D&AD Yellow Pencil. D&AD is one of the most prestigious international awards in advertising and to be recognised in this way is testament to the effort that the girls put into their work.

Christina and Claire looking very happy indeed.

Hundreds of students from around the world enter into the competition and the standard of work is extremely high so to win amongst such company shows just how well they have done. The girls won the Digital Advertising category and the client for this years competition was Spotify. Claire and Christina came up with an idea that neatly tied together the strengths of Spotify and Facebook to create a campaign that rewarded music fans for their dedication.

Time to clear some room on the mantlepiece.

    Claire & Christina's winning work.

The awards ceremony was held at Old Spitalfields Market in East London and the awards were presented by D&AD President Rosie Arnold and D&AD Chairman Tim Lindsay. The ceremony was an exciting and fun packed evening for all involved and was an event that the girls will remember for a long time.

The awards ceremony in Spitalfields Market.

The girls also featured highly in another D&AD competition category, this time for the Aviva brief and were recognised as best in year for their work. To feature once in a competition as tough as this is quite an achievement but to feature in two categories is almost unheard of, so a double congratulation is in order. Because the girls did so well they have been invited to join the D&AD Graduate Academy where they will attend seminars, lectures and workshops with leading industry figures as well as gaining work experience at some of the best agencies in London.

As you may remember students from the University of Lincoln Creative Advertising programme were also successful in last year's awards in the Integrated category. To reach this level of achievement students require dedication and analytical thinking as well as a touch of inspiration, so well done girls and here's to next years competition.
  • Graduates win digital award

    Great news!

2010 Lincoln Creative Advertising graduate team Jan Pruijser & Rachel Clough have won the Ocean Outdoor Digital Billboard competition with their 'Back to the Hedgerow' augmented reality work for Westfield shopping centre.

Here's Jan to tell you all about it:-

'Since we graduated in 2010 we've had some great placements at Grand Union, Big Ideas Online, Albion and now we're at Grey.'

'A little while ago one of our account handlers for Jordan's Cereals asked if we wanted to have a crack at a competition brief for Ocean Outdoor. They supply advertising space on digital billboards across the UK.

'So a quick background on Jordan’s Cereal: they are all about the wildlife, they even set aside 10% of all their farmland to make homes for them.'

'We approached the brief in a very open-minded manner and tried to create something that would communicate the message whilst focusing on being engaging and rewarding for the user. We could spend ages explaining the idea but it's probably better (and definitely clearer) if you watch the video below...'

'We won first prize! (you can see the other winners here).'

'The prize included £150,000 in media spend on Ocean Outdoor digital billboards. But the best part…£1000 of Apple vouchers! So we went straight down to Regent Street and purchased lovely new shiney iPads. Now for the hard part - getting it all made within budget...!'

Well done, Jan & Rachel. That really is fantastic news and another fine win for Lincoln Creative Advertising graduates.
  • Brooke wins Howies Microadventure competition

Here's a quick (but pretty cool) thing.

Earlier this month, Creative Advertising 2010 graduate Brooke Cutmore (who works with creative partner Ruud Kool at Creature, London) was announced to be one of four winners of the Howies Microadventures competition with the short film 'From London to Lewes' that she made with Luke Clark.

To quote from the Howies website:-

'Microadventures let anyone plunge into a world of cheap Credit Crunch adventures. Adventures that are close to home, which are fun, affordable, easy to organise and designed to get you doing and experiencing things that would normally pass you by.'

We asked you to get out there and do your own Microavdenture and send us your story. For us, these four stories really captured the spirit of Adventure.'

You can check out the other three winning entries on the Howies Brainfood website.
    Here's Brooke and Luke's film.

Well done Brooke (and Luke!). Loving the spirit!
