  • Another successful London Week

Just before Easter the third year students had their 'London Week'. The year group was split in two and each group visited one agency a day. In total the cohort visited 10 agencies in 10 days.

Some of the agencies set briefs the week before and ran a crit when the students arrived. Some agencies were even more demanding and set a brief in the morning and then critiqued the work in the afternoon. A couple of the agencies gave presentations on how to get a job in advertising, showed some of their recent work & gave advice on portfolio content, industry expectations & how to successfully make the transition from University to career.

Monday saw visits to Leo Burnett & DLKW:–

As you can see it really was quite a week!

Thank you SO much to all everyone at the agencies who helped organise the week. We simply couldn't have done it without you. The vast majority of these were past University of Lincoln Creative Advertising graduates so you see how it goes: come to Lincoln > graduate from Lincoln > get a placement (or two or three) > get a job at a top agency > keep in touch with the staff team in Lincoln > help the next generation of creative talent. You get the idea.

Next up for the third years, pull everything together that they've learned in Lincoln and London and prepare for their portfolios for final assessment. And then it's the degree show (and Private View party).

    Nice.
  • Second years visit Ogilvy

Ogilvy's rather swanky offices in Canary Wharf, London

Here's level 2 Creative Advertising student Abigail Wither's report on the recent student visit to Ogilvy in London:–

“On Friday 29th November 2013 level two Creative Advertising students visited Ogilvy & Mather in Canary Wharf, London. We sat in some very cool chairs and met some very cool people.

“The visit was run by Tom and Daz who graduated from the Lincoln's Creative Advertising course five years ago. They reinforced all the advice that Justin, Mike and Gyles keep giving us on the course: observations lead to insight; commitment is critical; always keep it simple and aim high. It felt great actually sitting in an ad agency rather than siting in the studio in Lincoln.

The second years admiring Ogily's creative decor.

“Tom and Daz carefully explained the structure of Ogilvy and talked us through the various stages of creating an advert from the initial briefing to every level the idea goes through before it's actually produced. We learned about traffic, client presentations, TV production, digital executions, being on-set, production and, naturally, finance.

“As part of the visit Tom & Daz arranged people from different areas of the agency to come and speak to us:

    –  Will Smith, Account Executive, whose role is to bridge the gap between the creatives and the client.
    –  Kim Parrett, TV Producer, who works with the creatives to make their ideas into a TV ad (who also reminded us that we should never be frightened to say ‘I don’t know’ because she still says it and that’s the only way we are going to learn).

Kim gives the students some great advice.

“We also got to meet Mark Doyle, Project Director at The Blue Hive, responsible for all of Ford's marketing, who reminded us to never be arrogant and always be willing to learn.

“I could write for hours on everything we learnt, but overall it was a very eye opening and incredibly informative visit. Thanks to everyone involved.”

Thanks Abbie. And a huge thanks to Tom and Daz who organised everything and made the visit so worthwhile. Cheers guys!
  • London Week - Ogilvy

The London Week third year reports continue. Next up we have a student review of the visit to Ogilvy.

    Ogilvy - Jenny McDonald

We were greeted by past Lincoln graduates, Daz and Tom, who were amongst the first graduates of the Creative Advertising course in Lincoln. After being ushered up into the creative department, the scene was somewhat different - with its smooth finishes and angular features, it looked like a very cool, modern art gallery.

Prior to the visit we were given a live brief that Tome & Daz had just finished work on: Grants Whisky. The aim of the brief was to advertise the liquor to 29-35 year old men.

We presented our work in the boardroom with a brief explanation of each of our ideas. Daz and Tom then critiqued each idea and analysed their pros and cons. Some of the work we showed was similar to the ideas they developed whilst working on the brief. After each of us had presented our ideas we were asked us which campaigns we felt worked the best. Nick &Gemma won a bag of chocolates for their idea based around 'discussions' and Lucy & Vicky also won a bag of chocolates for their idea based around creating a 'Top Gent Day'.

The final prize however was awarded by Daz and Tom themselves to Kwan for her idea based around Grants being passed down through generations. Kwan was rewarded with a bottle of Grants for her idea! We then had a Q&A session with Daz and Tom and learned about their experiences of breaking into the industry and their time at the world renowned agency, Ogilvy.

After experiencing a tour last year at Ogilvy New York, it was very interesting to see how the London office operated. To be in the midst of such a big agency was also very insightful, especially for those of us who hope to work there (or it's equivalent) one day.
  • Where are they now? Tom & Darren

Tom Smith and Darren Urquhart graduated from the University of Lincoln's Creative Advertising programme in 2008 and work as a creative team at Ogilvy. Last year they created a very high profile campaign for BP. You will have certainly seen the TV ad over the past few months.

Here's Tom to tell you more:

'BP wanted to announce their commitment to the Olympics, from supporting British hopefuls to offsetting the carbon footprint of spectators.

'So we created a TV, print and online campaign that took you on a journey with British athletes to see what BP are doing for London 2012. Focusing on six Olympic and Paralympic athletes from Team GB, we wanted to capture the energy and excitement of the journey to the Olympics.

'Shooting in locations ranging from the British Museum to a beach in Margate was at times a logistical nightmare but it was also a lot of fun, especially when trying to get the fast paced and energetic shots we wanted.

'We used everything possible to shoot the campaign, including a helicopter, a boat, a beach buggy, a crane, a cameraman on rollerskates and even a remote control car with a camera mounted on top.

'Overall, it was an incredible experience and we even got a signed shirt from all the athletes out of it.'

Here is a fascinating 'behind-the-scenes' video of the making of the TV ad that shows how much work was involved in its production:

And here's the final TV ad:

    The final TV ad

One of the double page press ads featuring Jessica Ennis

Another of the double page press ads featuring Lizzie Armitstead

One of the benefits of working in advertising: freebies – a signed shirt from all the athletes involved

Another great example of high profile, national campaign, effectively executed by a Lincoln Creative Advertising alumni team. Well done Tom and Darren.
